I believe that in order to be healthy you have to be balanced in all aspects of the body: structural, chemical, and energetic/electrical. This is a rather new concept for doctors – most doctors are trained to look at one thing only (the chiropractor looks at the spine only; the GI specialist looks at the GI tract only; the cardiologist looks at the heart and blood vessels only; etc). This new concept is part of a new trend in medicine known as Functional Medicine. Functional Medicine doctors are trained to understand all the interconnectedness of all parts of the body, with the goal of looking for the real underlying cause of illness, and treating using as natural means as possible.
Traditional Medicine:
You have symptoms. The doctor gives you a label (diagnosis) based on the symptoms, and then a prescription (what is the right drug for this disease) to mask the symptoms, which then create more, new symptoms (side-effects).
Functional Medicine:
You have symptoms. Now of course I care about your symptoms, but I care more about figuring out “why” you are having the symptoms (something is out of balance in your body) and what is causing the imbalance in the first place (ex: diet, stress, hidden infection, hidden inflammation, toxins, etc.). Treatments are based on fixing the underlying causes using natural medicines (herbs, vitamins, minerals, etc.) and lifestyle changes. Once the underlying cause is fixed, the symptoms go away all by themselves, and a healthier state of health is achieved.
